Voice Caller

Reaching people who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing or with Speech Disability through Alaska Relay Services

Voice User Dial: 7-1-1 or 800-770-8255

Hearing individuals can use a standard phone or a cell phone to call TTY users. The Communications Assistant  (CA) types the spoken words of the standard phone user for the TTY user to read. The CA then reads aloud the typed responses from the TTY user.

How does Voice to TTY work?

  1. Dial the voice number at 7-1-1 or 800-770-8255.

  2. You will hear the CA answer "ALASKA RELAY. CA XXXX, MAY I HAVE THE NUMBER TO CALL?"  Each CA has a unique identification number instead of a name, and this number is rotated on a scheduled basis.

  3. Give the CA the area code and telephone number of the party you wish to call. If there are any further instructions, you may give those to the CA as well.

  4. The CA will process your call, relaying exactly what the TTY user types to you, as well as exactly what you speak to the TTY user. Be sure to talk directly to the TTY user, avoiding "tell him/her..." At the end of each response you make, say "Go Ahead;" you will hear the same from the TTY user. This indicates that you've completed your response, and that it's the other party's turn to respond.

  5. At Alaska Relay, we offer communication choices to our relay callers. This allows them ways to connect with all of the people in their lives.
