Relay Services

Alaska Relay offers many ways for you to communicate to anyone that has a phone. We have the services you need to never miss a word.

What is Alaska Relay?

Alaska Relay is a free public service that enables people with hearing or speech loss who use a teletypewriter (TTY) or other assistive device to communicate with standard telephone users.

The conversation is relayed between the two parties by a specially trained Alaska Relay Communications Assistant (CA). Alaska Relay is available 24 hours a day 365 days per year.

Standard TTY Relay Service is for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech loss and wish to communicate with a hearing person who uses a standard telephone.

Hearing people, or standard telephone users, can learn how to call a hearing or speech disabled person who uses a TTY.

Relevo en Español - El Servicio de Relevo de Alaska es un servicio gratuito disponible 24 horas y 7 dias, que permite a las personas sordas, sordo-ciegos y con dificultad.

People with a speech disability, or those who use a voice synthesizer, can use their own voice on a STS relay call. The Communications Assistant (CA) repeats the words exactly as they are spoken to their caller.

Voice Carry Over or VCO is a type of relay call that allows a deaf or hard of hearing person to use their own voice to speak directly to the hearing/standard telephone user.

HCO allows a person with a speech disability who has hearing capability make a call by typing to the Communication Assistant (CA) who reads the message to the other party.

Relay users with impaired vision often use special TTYs equipped with TeleBraille or large visual displays and prefer slower typing speeds to read messages. Alaska Relay will provide customized relay service for the unique need of these individuals.

Alternative Internet (IP) Based Relay Services are available to people with hearing and speech loss.

Alaska Relay offers additional services such as Directory Assistance, and International calls.
